Craigievar Castle – The Fairytale Scottish Castle
Craigievar Castle has a fairytale look to it. The castle has many turrets and gargoyles. Craigievar Castle was built on an L plan and is is seven stories tall. The idea of an L shaped castle is that defenders can protect the main entrance, by shooting from the adjacent wall. © Bill Bagshaw Photography & Photography Courses
Craigievar Castle was completed in 1626, and originally featured a huge portcullis and a walled courtyard. Craigievar was originally surrounded by four towers, as well as the courtyard wall.
During the first world war Craigievar Castle was used as a hospital for wounded soldiers.
The castle is open to the public, and stands in beautiful grounds with marked walks. Inside there is a Great Hall with a musicians gallery. The castle is famous for its ornate ceilings.
Craigievar is located near to Lumphanan and Alford.
