Gilles Villeneuve

Gilles Villeneuve

Gilles Villeneuve – a Ferrari legend remembered.
The Canadian Grand Prix is when Canadians remember Gilles Villeneuve – after whom the Montreal circuit is named.

Gilles was probably Ferrari’s most legendary F1 driver. He was killed in a 140 m.p.h. qualifying crash at Zolder.
Here’s a shot I took of him at The British Grand Prix.

Photoshop hadn’t been invented at the time, so I got the distorted blur effect by using an ancient 1940’s press camera. This gave me focal plane distortion coupled with erratic shutter closure.

Gilles Villeneuve at The British Grand Prix shot on 5×4” colour negative.
